This was the strangest book! It went on and on to nowhere. I had a very hard time trying to figure out what the plot was. It makes no sense. The characters personalities change from one cha poo yet to the next....nothing is consistent. So it is just boring. No recommendation.
This is the second book in the series from Rags to Riches. It is totally different than the first one, but it showed an emotional journey with a depth not all experience. Lynette had to know what was inside her own self before she could become the "wife" she needed to be. As a minister's daughter she was forced to see things that many hide behind that position. I loved that the details of her life were neatly, in not with breath held, put rightly in order.
At first I was not sure I would like this book. The characters were interesting and I truly enjoyed the secondary characters. The Merlock girls were interesting even though they were in the background. Strong heroine in the end because she went after what she wanted. The hero was kind of a mixture of emotion. At time's you liked him and other times not so much. I enjoy Lee's books
The death of Lynette's father leaves her penniless with two choices. She can either allow herself to be a burden on family or sell herself into marriage. For a price, Viscount Marlock, a known rake, has offered to arrange a profitable marriage match and teach her how to catch a husband. As lessons progress it becomes a question of who will catch who. A good read.
Didn't think I would like this one because of the sexual exploitation of women aspect. However, the author did an excellent job of describing the limited options available to women and I could see how the character made the choice that she did. It also, made me truly appreciate the time I live in now. The man who would usually be cast as the villain was so equally caught in his limited choices that I fell in love with him right along with his victims.
This book is definately the best of Jade Lee's "Regency Rags to Riches Series" but that's like saying that a lukewarm Coke is better than tapwater and stale coffee. It earns a 4-star rating from me, however, because it is a wholly unusual and most original story and is well-written, despite the it's lack of real substance.
Overall, the story is disturbing. It's difficult to root for the hero and heroine to get to their happily ever after, because the situation the young beauty finds herself in is unsavory at best. The characters all seem so unredeemable that it's difficult to see them as anything more.
Lynette, a penniless parson's daughter, finds herself in a desperate situation. After her father's death, her only option seems to be to follow the rest of her family to her uncle's estate, where they will undoubtedly be unwelcome and Lynette married off to some disgusting ally of her uncle. A member of her father's congregation discretely gives her the name of a Baroness who can help her meet and snare a wealthy husband. Resigned that anything is better than living with her uncle, Lynette sets off to London to meet with the Baroness.
But instead of being under the Baroness's wing, she discovers the one really calling the shots is a devil of a man, the Viscount Marlock. He takes control of Lynette's life, training her in all the ways to attract a wealthy, older husband. In exchange for his expertise and introductions, he will keep a portion of her bridal price. Basically, he is running a wife-for-sale operation catering to London's powerful elite. This is the man we are supposed to cheer on as he wins Lynette's heart. Right.
Lynette's "training" includes some rather racy, highly steamy, and unusual scenes, well outside the usual Regency era fare. I didn't know whether to cringe or keep reading.
In the end, I cared enough for Lynette that I kept reading so that I could get to the part where she would be happy. Eventually, she is. It's just the getting there that wasn't so great.
A super sexy book from a talented writer. You may dislike the viscount but you will understand him. Lynette and Adrian are both trying to save themselves from a disastrous life. Characterization is spot-on. Side characters are well drawn. We are as intrigued as Lynette is in the unfolding of the story. A definite page turner.
