Seems to be a fitting conclusion to the After Ameria series. Birmingham leave open the possibility of another volume. but it's not necessary. Some of the major characters are welcomed back (mostly fondly) and the extended epilogue at the conclusion is excellent. The action shifts from location to location, but Birminghams drops hints along the way to remind one of exactly where we are in the story (or back story). Highly entertaining, but I suggest you read the earlier volume of the series first (Without Warning and After America).
This is the third and final installment in John Birmingham's trilogy that started with WITHOUT WARNING and continued with AFTER AMERICA. If you have not read those two yet, please do so, and in that order. The stories and the characters involved make a lot more sense that way. This book is a fitting conclusion to the trilogy. Birmingham's main characters are well fleshed out and the plot lines work. Echelon agent Caitlin Monroe carries much of the action, starting out in South America and ending up in Blackstone's Texas. Sofia, Miguel's daughter, goes back to Texas to exact revenge on Blackstone for the murder of her family. Julianne Balwyn and the Rhino show up in Australia, being hunted down by people intent on killing them. All the plot lines resolve most satisfactorily.

My sole complaint about the book has been echoed by a few other reviewers. Something more should have been said about the nature of the Wave and why it did what it did. Also, some more action should have taken place in Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, areas of the US not impacted by that event. Had there been some closure there, it would have made this excellent book truly outstanding in my eyes.

Yes, this book is well worth reading. I really enjoyed it.
On the small scale, this is a great book. I love that the author brought us 3 strong, independent women as the lead characters. The story drew me in and once I got started it was difficult to quit. I was completely satisfied with the way all of the loose ends from the previous book were tied up. The author did an excellent job creating well-rounded characters - I was especially impressed that I found myself feeling some sympathy for Blackstone at one point, when all I wanted to do was hunt him down and kill him after the last book.

However, I have the same complaint about this book as I did about the second book in this series. The author created this fantastic, intriguing alternate world in book one and then spent books two and three telling the stories of individual characters, paying very little attention to the larger world in which they were living. I wanted to know more about the state of the world, about the big political picture, and how the world's leaders and the remaining global population were dealing with the new reality. I also thought that the ending was kind of rushed.

If you read and enjoyed the first 2 books in this series, then I highly recommend that you read this one, too. If you haven't read the first two, I don't recommend that you start with this one. You will enjoy it much more if you have read the preceding volumes.
The first two books were extremely engaging and although a combination science fiction and alternate history, you could relate to the characters and the storylines. It was easy to visualize the characters and even place yourself looking through their eyes. Also the scope of the world and it's reaction to the Wave was very engaging.

Now he's turned the story into a murder/mystery "whodunit?" combined with one of Robert Ludlum's "Bourne" books. The characters aren't believable and neither is the story. A 17-year old girl who almost with ease makes her way through the mid-west wasteland with 7 bucks in her pocket and not a friend to her name to assassinate one of the two most powerful people in America. An "Echelon" female operative who is Chuck Norris/James Bond/Bruce Lee and SEAL Team Six all rolled into one, complete with every high-tech device imaginable at her fingertips. A bad guy who was done wrong once and now is expending insane amounts of energy and resources to track down meaningless people at the 4 corners of the world just to get revenge. And all this in a post-Wave world where I'm sure all of these people would frankly have better things to do to get their lives back in place. You get the idea.

It's not a bad read - it's just not Birmingham's best work. I'd wait for the paperback version.
It was disappointing that after the great first novel of the trilogy, the author seems to contradict so much of what he taught in book 1.

It still is an interesting book with great descriptions of Australia.
