Lately, nothing in Garrett Nash's life has made sense. When two people close to the U.S. Marshal wrong him deeply, Garrett expects God to remove them from his life. Instead, the Lord relocates Garrett to another city to start over, as if he were the offender instead of the victim. Criminal attorney Shari Carmen is comfortable in her own skin most of the time. Being a "dark and lovely" African-American sister has its challenges, especially when it comes to relationships. Although she's a fireball in the courtroom, she knows how to fade into the background and keep the proverbial spotlight off her personal life. But literal spotlights are a different matter altogether. While playing tenor saxophone at an anniversary party, she grabs the attention of Garrett Nash. And as God draws them closer together, He makes another request of Garrett, one to which it will prove far more difficult to say "Yes, Lord."

Have you ever read a book where something out of the ordinary happens and it makes you want to have a few choice words with the author, but you're trying to live right, so you can't say what you really want to? Well, that's what happened when I read this book. Now I saw Pat a few weeks after I finished, and I told her several times throughout the weekend that I was a little upset with her about what happened.

In Defense of Love is a story of two people who are out to change the world through the Justice system in America. Criminal Attorney Shari Carmen, a gifted musician and a bomb attorney that fights and wins for her downtrodden clients is great in the court room, but unlucky in love, especially when she get's back handed "complements" that she's pretty for a dark skinned lady. She meets US Marshall Garrett Nash, who is also a musician, and had to relocate after a scandal at his family's church. As they make beautiful music off and on the court room, are they ready for what's about to happen. One of my favorite scenes was when Garret's Patriac grandfather was at the hospital, a cousin brought a bootleg minister that was praying over him, but Sherri is well versed in spiritual warfare and stopped demons from committing destruction.

There were several truths through out this book. Colorism is still rampant in our community, (which to me is still a stupid way to judge people), and The book will make you question if you really know what it means to say completely Yes to God. Now let me also say this book is Christian Fiction, so you might feel convicted when reading it. It was one of the best and most christian thought provoking book I've read this year.

Ms. Simmons I use your last name not because of age, bur because of the respect I have for you. I am in love with Camen Sister Book 2. It is so inspiration. It was wonderful seeing a family that litterally praying to God and listening for his answers. I love all the love in all the families. I laugh, cried, laugh and was turly inspired..... I loved all you books and I've been waiting for that 5 star one, will here it is.....Gods continued Blessing. People get this book and if you haven't read the first one, that one too.... Kudos
I am in tears as I finish reading this book. I was crying tears of sorrow but in the last few pages, my tears changed from sorrow to happiness. Author Pat Simmons, you are the truth my dear! I stumbled across your books just a couple of weeks ago. I'm reading out of order but that's okay. I truly enjoyed Shari & Garrett's story. I love that you are writing romance novels based on "what saith the Lord". God is faithful to us and keeps his promises. As a single mother, terrified of the dating scene, this book was not only entertainment but a story of hope. Thank you for sharing your gift to us! Keep 'em coming! God bless you!
Our black community tends to be racist against our own people. Shari experienced this type of unacceptable behavior as a child growing up and in her adult life. She would hear people say that she was beautiful for a dark girl.

Garrett was dealing with deception that cut him to the core. He was told to relocate and start a new life.

Shari and Garrett's romance started and blossomed after Shari excepted a request for her to play her saxophone at Garret's grandparent's anniversary party.

Ms Simmons weaved this beautiful love story with God in the center of their relationship. A true love story as their faith is tested. But in the end, but God!!!!

I loved this book which is the second addition of The Carmen series. I highly recommend it. Your soul will be blessed!!!
Pat Simmons is a very anointed and talented writer whose work I have had the pleasure of reading numerous times. Having the ability to use her G-D given talents to entertain by bringing to life through words, characters who comes bearing gifts of lessons to learn. This is the story of Shari Carmen and Garrett Nash.

Shari Carmen of the beautiful Carmen Sisters, is an attorney and talented musician. We are allowed to go on her journey of learning to let go of a childhood hurt and insecurity by learning to love and trusting the voice of G-D. I was reminded of Proverbs 35-6 (NKJV) "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."

Garrett Nash, a U.S. Marshall who sees Carmen at a family function and learns that they play in a church band ministry together, feels an instant connection to her but he has some baggage of his own. A godly man, Garrett has to learn to open up and trust again after a devasting betrayal. This is a story of forgiveness and overcoming insecurities brought on by mindless individuals. A story of agape love, family love, and the truth of G-D's perfect will being done.

In Defense of Love does not disappoint. Bravo, Bravo Bravo to Pat Simmons, looking forward to Book Three of The Carmen Sisters!
This book really resonated with me. The dark girl syndrome still exist today unfortunately. I was teased all the time about my dark skin gowning up. Even today, I still am. I can relate to Shari. I love the way God steps in on time. I was thrown at the beginning because I thought Garret was running from his sins, but keep reading. It makes sense later. At one chapter later in the book, I cried, I cried, I cried. You will have to read it for yourself because I don't want to give it away. Must read. I am so glad I read the series on the Carmen Sisters. I really love their love for the Lord and how close they are as a family. Although the Jamisons are my favorite, the Carmen Sister are forces to be reckoned with!!! Totally enjoyed In defense of Love!!!!
